I sustained a life-changing spinal cord injury in 1983
at the age of 18. Over the years, I succesfully worked
through the challenging post-injury issues associated
with acclimating my home environment, transportation,
personal care and establishing daily routines.
My achievements attracted the attention of other disabled people, and I found I had a talent for tailoring solutions that significantly improved their lifestyle. I learned that our community faces the following unique challenges:
- Newly disabled people are often forced to rely on solutions crafted by caregivers, contractors, family members, and occupation/physical therapists, who, though well meaning, do not live in a wheelchair and typically do not fully understand how best to accomodate a disabled person.
- Frequently, disabled individuals have different specialists addressing various aspects of their lives. The result is fragmentation, with no one looking at your big picture, no one evaluating the inter-operability of the various solutions, and no one integrating the future trajectory of your condition or life goals.
- Some off-the-shelf solutions are effective, but many of them need to be modified to meet your individual needs, especially considering progressive neurological disorders. Many times the solution is not commercially available and needs to be built from the ground up.
